Masonic Temple, Detroit 1/21/79. This show was a superb and fitting end to the often-overlooked but outstanding Snowbelt Tour. The weather in Detroit was God-awful, which led the band to start late and, as Bobby acknowledges, to play late. The sonic quality of the audience recording is decent despite unfortunate midrange piano distortion. The music itself is incendiary and compelling. Strong, clear vocals (without Donna, who had flown home after a fistfight with Keith), flavorful Garcia con brio (especially in the coda of "Looks Like Rain": a remarkable cascade of thirty-second notes), and pronounced and effective dynamics, all heard consistently throughout a thematically rich twelve-song first set and an expansive second set, conspire to make this an unusual yet oddly comforting end to the tour. Very enjoyable indeed.

Best to all,
